It is in the nature of things that meteorological science, and in particular weather forecasting, relies on international cooperation, as the development of weather patterns extends over a wide area. Not only the practical weather and climate service, but also the development of meteorological research required the establishment of uniform observation standards. The first international meteorological congress took place in September 1873 in Vienna. The holding of the first congress in Vienna is also a sign of the high reputation that the Vienna Central Institute for Meteorology already enjoyed abroad. After the Second World War, the International Meteorological Organization was transferred to the new World Meteorological Organization, which, as a special organization of the United Nations with 30 member states, took over the agendas in March 1959. Over time, it has become a powerful organization with 135 member states. The 100th birthday of the organization was celebrated from 4 to 7 September 1973 in Vienna with a scientific conference and a big ceremony in the founding room. The model for the brand image is a painting by Canaletto of the building of the Vienna Academy of Sciences, in which the International Meteorological Organization was founded.
