For nearly seven decades, the pedagogue, conservationist and author Hannelore 'Loki' Schmidt stood by the side of politician and journalist Helmut Schmidt. Hannelore Glaser, born on 3 March 1919 in Hamburg, grew up in modest circumstances in the district of Barmbek. From 1940 Loki Glaser, who married Helmut Schmidt on June 27, 1942, worked as a teacher at several Hamburg elementary and secondary schools. In 1972 she gave up her profession and took public duties at the side of her husband, who was elected in 1974 Chancellor. In her role as Chancellor's wife, she not only performed protocol tasks, but also promoted and worked for nature conservation during this time. With the initiative launched in 1980 to promote the "Flower of the Year", she raised her concerns to the public at large. In recognition of her outstanding work as a conservationist and researcher, she honored the Hamburg Senate with honorary citizenship. On October 21, 2010 Loki Schmidt died at the age of 91 years.
