On November 4, 1840, the "Steiermärkische-Ständische Montanlehranstalt" in Vordernberg was officially opened. As future professor, Archduke Johann had already selected in 1833 the only 24-year-old Peter Tunner, who had accumulated a wealth of experience in this area through study trips to the leading countries of the iron industry until he took office in the opening year of the school. The revolutionary year of 1848 also brought fundamental changes for the Monteschool. It was moved to Leoben and renamed on 2 September 1861 in "Bergakademie". The appointment to the "Montanist University" in 1904 and the equality with the Technical University by awarding the right to doctorate reflect the increasing importance of the educational institution. Since October 1, 1975, the Montanistische Hochschule has been renamed "Montanuniversität Leoben".
