On 4 October 1819, the association of the first Austrian savings bank was founded in Vienna. It emerged from the efforts of the upper social classes to contribute to relieving the plight of the poor and was therefore primarily a social act. By 1835, there were six foundations of savings banks in today's state territory. These initiatives followed the basic social idea of the First Savings Bank, but, like them, were not to be seen as welfare, but should allow the ever-growing workforce relying solely on wages to safely create a small capital give.
