Clara Josephine Wieck was born in Leipzig on 13 September 1819 as the second child of Friedrich Wieck and his first wife Mariane Wieck (born Tromlitz). Friedrich Wieck, who was considered one of the leading music teachers of the 19th century, systematically trained his daughter: Shortly after her ninth birthday she appeared in public for the first time; the concert season of 1837/38 led to her international breakthrough. In September 1840 she married the composer Robert Schumann. The couple lived for the first four years in what is now the Schumann House in Leipzig. At the end of 1844 they moved to Dresden and in 1850 to Düsseldorf. Her concert tours took Clara Schumann all over Europe, she was the most important pianist of her time. In 1878 she was appointed "First Piano Teacher" of the newly founded Dr. Hoch's Konservatorium in Frankfurt am Main. On 12 March 1891 she gave her last concert, one year later she also retired from teaching. Clara Schumann died on 26 March 1896 in Frankfurt am Main.
