The high power consumption in winter and the simultaneously reduced power generation capability of the run-of-river power plants require the use of additional electricity suppliers. In part, this is done by electricity imports and storage power plants, but mainly by thermal power plants. One, or even the largest, power plant in Austria is the steam power plant Simmering of Wiener Stadtwerke. Together with other thermal power plants, this steam power plant based on heating oil and natural gas supplies up to 50 percent of the required electricity during the winter months.
