The Academy of Arts, the first German art academy and after "Rome and Paris Europe's third" commits in 1996 the 300th anniversary of its founding. The history of the academy represents an important piece of Berlin, German, indeed European art and cultural history. The great names of German culture - from Schlüter, Goethe, Schinkel and Schadow to Liebermann, Heinrich and Thomas Mann as well as Scharoun and Böll - are also included connected to the Academy. Especially in the controversial debate lay the strength of this institution: to be an open forum of opinions and to inform about new art trends. The special feature of the academy is that it unites the arts like fine arts and architecture, music and literature, theater as well as film and media art like no other and thus facilitates interdisciplinary exchange. The Academy of Arts, originally both an artist's firm and an educational institution, has already transferred the task of education to the Royal Academic Colleges of Music and the Fine Arts in the 19th century. These two institutions have merged into the Hochschule der Künste, which is currently the largest German training center for artists. (Text: Academy of Arts, Berlin)
