Long before the start of oil production, two geological areas were given special attention because of possible "gas and oil openness". These were the Alpine foothills and the Vienna Basin. The latter was after a find in Windisch-Baumgarten, through which the oil production was initiated in 1930, long in the center of attention. During the drilling occurred at that time between 680 and 719 m of oil. In a scoop attempt from 729 m depth was a prolonged gas outbreak, which brought about 5 tons of paraffin-containing oil. With these results began in 1930, the Austrian oil production. A significantly larger production was achieved by the probe "Gösting I" in 1932. Many more successful drilling followed. By 1978, Austria had produced a total of 84 million tonnes of crude oil. The special postage stamp "50 years of crude oil in Austria" shows a boring worker, who from the working platform of a drilling derrick from a Bohrstängezug with a roller chisel in the borehole leaves.
