In December 1950, the Association of Austrian Adult Education Centers was founded as an umbrella organization of adult education centers and their regional associations in the community college Vienna Urania. The 293 community colleges currently conduct around 45,000 courses and seminars a year, counting around half a million participations. In addition, there are a large number of very different individual events: lectures, educational trips, film screenings, etc. In addition, some adult education centers and state associations carry out projects for the further development of educational work, which usually take several years and in many cases are co-financed by the educational programs of the European Union. A new trend is that more and more degree-related courses are offered at adult education centers. Due to their size, adult education centers are the largest institution of adult education in Austria. They see themselves as a democracy committed, ideologically bound to human rights, independent of political parties educational institution. Therefore, it is part of their self-understanding, not to admit anti-democratic, racist, anti-Semitic, misogynist and other groups of people discriminatory content and behavior and counteract such tendencies.
