The Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg as well as the cities of Halle and Wittenberg are celebrating a great anniversary in 2002 with an academic anniversary year: 500 years ago, on 18 October 1502, the University of Wittenberg Leucorea opened its doors. It was the first German university founded in the beginning of modern times. In terms of the number of students, Leucorea was the largest university in Germany in the 16th century. In the 17th century it contributed significantly to the expression of a Lutheran sectarian culture. In 1817 she was merged with the 1694 founded University of Halle Fridericiana to United Frederick University. It received its present name in 1993 on the occasion of the 450th birthday of Martin Luther.
