On March 6, 1459, Jakob Fugger, named "The Rich," was born in Augsburg. On the threshold of the Middle Ages to modern times stands the great figure of this German financier and merchant, the banker of the emperors and popes. For the 500th anniversary of his birthday, the Deutsche Bundespost Saarland issues the commemorative stamp. The artists invited to the draft were free to choose the topic; they were able to represent the famous Fuggerei, which Jakob Fugger founded and built in the old imperial city of Augsburg as a model of love, which today still offers a friendly home to over one hundred families. Also heraldic and portrait suggestions were allowed. The graphic artists involved made use of every opportunity. The graphic artist Ernst Göhlert has delivered a draft. From Michel and Kieser went seven, from Eugen O. Sporer four, from Reinhart Heinsdorff six and Eugen Nerdinger five proposals. After detailed discussion, the Art Council came to the conclusion that the most effective solution was to select the design (but with a white value) of the graphic artists Michel and Kieser. He brings the two lilies from the arms of the Fugger in a succinct form, which results in a taut brand structure of the most memorable kind. The suggestion of Reinhart Heinsdorff, a delicate line weave bordered by noble text lines, seems to him to be equivalent. To achieve it, it would have needed the steel engraving. However, the shortage of time available for printing did not allow for this lengthy procedure, and therefore the draft could not be seriously suggested. As a further graphically well-formed solution, the art advisory board considered the portrait mark created by Ernst Göhlert after a woodcut by the Augsburg master Hans Burgckmair, a contemporary of Jakob Fugger. The Federal Minister of the Post and Telecommunications decided to carry out this draft. The stamp has been executed in four-color offset printing in the graphic arts company A. Bagel, Dusseldorf. Since November 20, 1947, the French currency was 1 Franc = 100 centimes on the Saarland stamps. the editorial board therefore records the nominal values from catalog number 226 in centimes.
