Austria's accession negotiations to the European Union began on 1 February 1993 and were formally completed on 12 April 1994. The Austrian population voted in favor of an overwhelming majority. After accession in 1995, Austria will be able to have a say in all EU institutions - in proportion to the size of the country with a disproportionate number of votes. In this way, Austria will have a say in shaping Europe's future, ecologically, economically and socially within the EU.
