The former military airport of the Royal Air Force east of the city of Schwechat became an international airport within just a few decades: Vienna International Airport. Through its function as a hub in the center of Europe, it is today the highest recognition in worldwide air traffic. The rapid development of the number of passengers and forecasts indicating an increase in world air traffic necessitated planning work to expand and modernize Vienna Airport. In the period from 1989 to the completion of Pier West in 1996, a new center of excellence, the new Terminal 1 with 50 additional check-in desks, an extended transit hall with the PLAZA shopping area and a spacious arrivals hall were put into operation. Pier West marks the end of this impressive expansion phase. After only 28 months of construction, it will open on March 29, 1996. It forms the architectural counterpart to Pier East and has 12 passenger boarding bridges, extends the passenger handling areas by 12,000m2 and allows direct connection between the aircraft and the terminal. The semicircular floor plan structure ensures short transfer times for transfer passengers. Eight X-ray roads ensure the safety of passengers. All in all, the restructuring contributed to Flughafen Wien AG being the first airport in Europe to receive certification to the highest quality standard - ISO 9001.
