Leipziger Spring Fair 1980 At the Leipzig Spring Fair 1980, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issued two multi-colored special postage stamps. Special cancellation from March 4 to May 3, 1980 Leipzig Spring Fair 1980 10-pfennig value: Building of the Karl-Marx-University Leipzig The new building was erected in the center of Leipzig on the Karl-Marx-Platz and offers manifold possibilities for the work of the Karl-Marx-University. Marx University as a spiritual cultural center of the city and the district of Leipzig. The inauguration of the skyscraper took place on August 31, 1973. Thus, not only the "alma mater Lipsiensis" founded in 1409 - the oldest university on the soil of the GDR - received a new face, but the over 142 meters high into the sky towering building - in the form of an exfoliated book - at the same time also became a landmark of the trade fair city that can be seen from afar. In 26 of a total of 3.4 upper floors of the skyscraper socio-scientific sections and institutes of the Karl Marx University are housed. On the 27th and 28th floor is the public cafe "Panorama". With the skyscraper also the seminar building and the Mensatrakt were handed over to the Karl Marx university. The seminar building offers with its 3,240 places the best conditions for a modern university education. Above all, however, the modern technical equipment of the building enables both the students' courses and self-study to be carried out according to the latest university educational and methodological aspects. The new three-storey auditorium building took over the Karl Marx University in February 1978 for use. It contains 22 lecture theaters of different sizes with a total of 3,280 seats. All lecture halls are modern - eleven equipped with audiovisual technology - and enable effective university teaching. Large-scale events such as the fairs are housed in the complex: press center (seminar building), foreigner's restaurant (refectory) and foreigner meeting point (lecture hall). At the auditorium building, the Leibnitz Memorial was re-erected in May 1978 in honor of the universal scholar and great philosopher born in Leipzig in 1646 on the 25th anniversary of the naming of the Karl Marx University.
