Originating from North America and the Mediterranean snapdragons adorn native gardens as colorful summer flowers for many centuries. The large snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) shown on the postage stamp is the best-known species of the genus, which belongs to the plantain plants (Plantaginaceae). The snapdragons owe their name to their unusual form - with gentle lateral pressure, the lip-like flowers open like little mouths. Therefore, in regional parlance they are also known as "Maulauferl". Thanks to different growth heights, large snapdrag nests feel well in flower gardens, as container plants, in window boxes and on window sills. They bloom from June to September in colorful variety and in strong shades or even soft pastel shades. Your flower throat is closed by a palatal bulging lower lip. These have to push insects down to get pollen and nectar. The bulge on the lower lip shows in many varieties a characteristic, usually yellow color.
