The motif shows the Höllental in the Black Forest. It is about nine kilometers long and has up to 600 meters high rocky slopes on the sides. According to legend, at its narrowest point, the so-called Hirschsprung, a deer fleeing from its hunters had jumped from one side to the other. Because of its scenic location, it is very popular with tourists and hikers. (The catalog numbers 28 to 37 appeared in November and December 1948 and January 1949. For the sake of systematics, the editors recorded the issue dates of 1 November and 1 December 1948 and 1 January 1949).
