The German Federal Post Office TELEKOM decided in 1982 to build the »German Telecommunication Satellite System Copernicus«. The purpose was to make the existing terrestrial infrastructure more flexible through two national satellites in order to be able to satisfy short-term needs quickly and comprehensively by means of the medium of satellite. Due to the successful launches of DFS Kopernikus 1 on June 6, 1989 and DFS Kopernikus 2 on July 25, 1990 with the European Ariane 44L, DBP TELEKOM has had a well-functioning and self-contained telecommunications satellite system serving Central Europe since 1990. DFS Kopernikus 1 (orbital position 23.5 degrees east) is the satellite for TV program distribution and supplies the cable networks of the DBP TELEKOM with z. Z. 9 German-language television programs and the Digital Satellite Broadcasting (DSR) with z. Z. 16 digital stereo radio programs in CD quality. All programs are also directly receivable with a satellite antenna of about 90 cm in diameter. DFS Kopernikus 2 (orbital position 28.5 degrees East) is taking over the following telecommunications services of the DBP TELEKOM: - switching of main connections from West Germany to the territory of East Germany (DIVA service), - data transmission via satellite (DASAT service) from 64 kBit / s to 2 Mbps in point to point or point to multipoint mode for dialing or reservation mode, - direct connection for distribution of messages in the data sector (DAVID service), - switching of TV studio and TV report lines for broadcasters and transportable reportage stations, - Provision of satellite capacity for private users. In order to create sufficient reserve capacity in orbit and secure the two operating satellites DFS Copernicus 1 and 2, DBP TELEKOM is considering starting the already completed DFS Copernicus 3.
