The motif shows the steel yard merchant Hermann Hillebrandt Wedigh on a painting by Hans Holbein. The artist was born in Augsburg in 1497 or 1498. After traveling a lot in the world, he settled in London in 1532. There he became court painter of Henry VIII in 1536. He left the old German painting and united in his style the beginnings of the German Renaissance. He was known above all for his fresco designs, altarpieces and murals. He died in London in 1543.
