To alleviate the distress of the flood victims and for the removal of the consequences of the worst flood for centuries in the Oder region in the state of Brandenburg, a special postage stamp with surcharge was issued; the proceeds of the contract will be used for the relief work following this flood disaster. In the state of Brandenburg - between Ratzdorf, south of Eisenhüttenstadt, and Hohenwutzen, near Bad Freienwalde - the belongings of many people fell victim to the Oderwasser. Gauges of more than six meters, four meters above normal, indicated that this was a flood of no-known magnitude during the last century. The state of Brandenburg relied on outside help in the immediate averting of the flood waters and will remain there if the damage has to be remedied. Volunteers from all parts of Germany, members of the volunteer fire brigades and professional fire brigades, the technical relief organization, the German Red Cross, the Federal Border Police and above all the German Armed Forces worked hand in hand to prevent the catastrophe, the sinking of the Oderbruch. Here on the Oder, one could experience that women and men in the greatest need do not forget their neighbors, and one sensed that solidarity is a word full of lively helpfulness. In addition to direct help, people from all over the country, from Europe, and even from other continents, have shown their solidarity with flood victims.
