Born in Ulm on December 28, 1925, the actress grew up in Berlin. She began her training as an animator at the Ufa in Babelsberg and then made the leap to the local state film school. From 1944 she played small roles in Ufa films. After the war, she worked on several stages in Berlin. Hildegard Knef became one of the most successful German postwar star through "The Murderers Are Among Us" (1946). Among other things, she achieved international film fame through »Snow on Kilimanjaro« (1952). She was also successful as a singer: From 1955 to 1957, she performed more than 650 times in the musical »Silk stockings« and recorded more than 60 records and CDs. Hilde-gard Knef was also successful as a writer with partly autobiographical works such as »The Gifted Gaul«. She died on February 1, 2002 in Berlin.
