The Houseleek (Sempervivum) belongs to the family Crassulaceae. Its botanical name derives from the Latin words "semper" for "always" and "vivus" for "alive". The range of the evergreen, perennial plants extends crescent-shaped from North Africa, through the mountains of Spain, the Alps, the Carpathians, the Balkans, northeastern Anatolia and Armenia to the Caucasus. The members of the genus Houseleek live mainly on sunlit rocks and in stony areas of the montane, subalpine and alpine zone. The most common species are the red-flowered spiderwort houseleek (Sempervivum arachnoideum), the common roof-rootwort (Sempervivum tectorum) and the mountain commonworm (Sempervivum montanum). For plant lovers who do not want to spend a lot of time caring, it is the perfect choice. Breeders and friends of the genus with their more than 7000 varieties have founded the Sempervivum / Jovibarba Section within the Society of Perennial Friends in Germany.
