Top event in road cycling The UCI Road World Championships will be held in the Tyrol from 22nd to 30th September 2018. Austrian Post AG is dedicating a special stamp to this top international sporting event. In 2018 the governing body for cycling, the UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale), is bringing the UCI Road World Championships to the Alps and thus presenting the around 1,000 top riders with an exceptional challenge. A total of twelve races starting from four different locations will make their way to the heart of the Tyrolean capital city, Innsbruck. The Ötz Valley and AREA 47; Hall-Wattens, with the Swarovski Kristallwelten; Rattenberg, set in Alpbachtal’s Seenland region and Kufstein are the starting locations for the Road World Championships, which will be watched by around two million spectators on TV. “Riding the Heart of the Alps” With its idyllic mountain roads, the Tyrol is perfectly suited to World Championship races with demanding climbs. The elite men's road race on 30th September particularly stands out: they will have to cover 265 kilometres with a total gain in altitude of around 5,000 metres. The spectacular route runs from Kufstein to Innsbruck, then seven times around the 24 kilometre-long Innsbruck circuit, the “Olympic circuit”. The high point follows with the ride up the Hungerburg through the challenging “Höll”, a section with inclines of up to 28 percent, before reaching the finishing line in front of the Hofburg Imperial Palace in Innsbruck city centre. For a few days this will make Innsbruck the focal point for road cycling, but even without this the Tyrolean capital city is well worth a visit: it is considered one of the most beautiful urban alpine cities in the world. Many challenging cycling tours, such as the Ötztal Cycle Marathon, start in the Ötz Valley, one of the starting locations for the World Championship races. The Hall-Wattens region offers trails for both athletic cyclists and those who cycle for pleasure, and is sure to impress on a cultural level thanks to the Swarovski Kristallwelten. The historic town of Rattenberg in the Alpbachtal Seenland region is the smallest town in Austria and offers a wide range of diverse cycle tours. Kufstein, with its old fortress, combines urban flair and rural idyll and is perfect for racing cyclists on their holidays.
