The German television programme of the sixties did not have much to offer the young people. But then, on 25 September 1965, this announcement sounded from the TV sets: "Good day, dear beat friends. Now the time has finally come. In a few seconds the first show on German television will begin, which is only made for you. But you, ladies and gentlemen, who may not like beat music, we ask for your understanding". This was followed by the first episode of the Beat Club of Radio Bremen, a live broadcast of beat music and dancing youths. To commemorate the Beat Club, a corresponding stamp appears in the special postage stamp series "Deutsche Fernsehlegenden". In the mid-1960s, Michael Leckebusch and Gerhard Augustin invented the Beat Club, which Ursula Nerke moderated with alternating male partners until it was discontinued at the end of 1972. Around 63 percent of Germans under the age of 30 switched on when the Beat Club flickered over the screen once a month, and the programme was also very successful internationally.
