Like the St. Peter's Cathedral, the Stone Bridge is also a landmark of the city of Regensburg. For 854 years it spanned the Danube and was for a long time the only river crossing. The »miracle of medieval engineering« became the model of the world-famous Prague bridge. Throughout history, the bridge has been destroyed, albeit only partially. In the Thirty Years' War, the commander of Regensburg blew up the bridge to stop the enemy troops. In 1809, French and Austrian armies destroyed the northern bridgehead with gunfire, and in 1945 explosions made the bridge impassable. It was completely repaired in 1968.
