From the experience of the revolutionary year 1848, the decision was taken in the autumn of the same year to build a "K.K. Artillery Arsenal" on a hill outside the city of Vienna, which was suitable for warding off internal disturbances. The museum building was built by the Danish architect Theophil Hansen in the period from 1850 to 1856 in the Moorish-Byzantine style. In a first phase, the Imperial Weapons Collection was housed there. When these holdings moved to the newly built Kunsthistorisches Museum in the 1880s, the "K.K. Waffenmuseum" was transformed into a "K.K. Army Museum" and served to document the development history of the Austrian army. After the destruction of the Second World War, the museum was reopened in 1955 as an "Army History Museum".
