Already on November 23, 1837, the first train of the Austrian Steam Railway traveled from (Vienna) Floridsdorf to (German) Wagram. The rights of railway workers were hardly taken into account during developments in the following decades, as was the case with the rest of the working class. Decisive for the struggle for fair working hours and conditions was the founding of the "Fach- und Unterstützungsvereins der Verkehrsmittiensteten Österreichs" on April 2, 1892. This organization can be seen as the origin of today's railway workers 'union, which plays a key role in the history of the Austrian workers' movement. The many victims among the members of the railway workers' trade unionists, who are forced into illegality, bear witness to this.
