In 1890, Austrian occupational statistics for the first time introduced the term "employee", which at that time, however, was attributed to only about one percent of all employed persons. On January 14, 1892, the Association of Commercial Employees was founded. Economic development and technological progress in the context of the Industrial Revolution rapidly increased the occupational groups that corresponded to the status of employees. As a result, a variety of interest groups emerged, dealing with social issues such as Working time or pay issues, committed to their members. In 1906, the National Council passed the Pension Insurance Law for Salaried Employees and in 1910 the Law on the "Service Contract of Aides." After the Second World War, the individual unions in the "union of private employees" reformed. Thus, the association for commercial employees in 1892 with 186 members today became the largest trade union in Austria with almost 340 000 members.
