The building permit for today's popular tourist attraction had already been granted in 1872. Funding difficulties delayed the start of construction by 17 years. Only on 1 August 1893 the ceremonial opening of the Schafbergbahn took place. Your starting point is the Schafbergbahn in St. Wolfgang (altitude 542 m). The mountain station "Schafbergspitze" is located at 1,732 m above sea level. Of the six steam locomotives delivered by the locomotive factory Krauss & Co to the Schafbergbahn to plans by Roman Abt, five are still in operation; one had to be delivered to the Schneebergbahn in 1970. Even the cars are still from the opening time and each offer 60 people. Today, around 225,000 people seeking recreation each year buy a ticket for the Schafbergbahn.
