The solemn opening of the Murtalbahn exactly 100 years ago, on October 8, 1894, led to the issue of this special postage stamp. For cost reasons, it was built as a 760-mm narrow-gauge railway. The Murtalbahn, which stretches across the provinces of Styria and Salzburg over a length of 65 km, has its starting point in the ÖBB - Unzmarkt train station. Every year it is used by around 430,000 travelers. This is due to the ever-increasing number of winter sports enthusiasts, cyclists and hikers who have come to appreciate the recreational value of this region.
