The Austrian Patent Office has been responsible for all areas of intellectual property law in Austria for 100 years. In addition to the examination and administration of patent, utility model, trademark and design applications and the granted industrial property rights, it is among other things responsible for logistics, international contracts and cooperation in this field. More than 100 graduate engineers and scientists in the technical examination departments of the Patent Office guarantee competence in all technical fields. A technical documentation with 49 million patent documents is the basis for the audit work, as well as the service and information services of the Patent Office. Over 80,000 patents and utility models effective for Austria are currently administered (as of Feb. 1999) by the Austrian Patent Office. In 1996, the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market in Alicante began operations. This means that trademarks with effect in Austria can not only be registered and registered in the Austrian Patent Office, but also in the Office for Harmonization. The accession of Austria to the EU has thus also become fully effective for the trademark sector.
