The Saale formed since the 8th century the border between the Frankish kingdom in the west and the Slavic settlement in the east. Around 928/29 the developing German Reich set about permanently incorporating the territories east of the Saale. This endeavor was realized within a few years. The brand's facility secured the state of administration-military. The area between Saale and Elbe has been divided into the brands Meissen, Merseburg and Zeitz. The administrative divisions were based on the castle districts, small territorial units of 5 to 20 villages around a military (castle) and ecclesiastical center. These certainly included the Burgwarde Gera and Langenberg, although there is no documentary evidence about them. In 995 donated the then king and later Emperor Otto III. the episcopal church in Zeitz the landscape Puonzowa with the fixed place Crozna (Krossen / Elster). In this context, the name "Gera" was first mentioned. After the simultaneous, but written by another hand border description of the territory Krossener Burgward Krossen reached in the south to the border of Gera. Four years later, Otto III bequeathed. his sister Adelheid, abbess of the Frauenstift Quedlinburg, the country Gera with all accessories at leisure. The gift of entire landscapes was nothing unusual at the time. It concerned above all areas, which had come in the course of the German Ostkolonisation in the direct possession of emperor and realm.
