Empress Elisabeth of Austria was born on 24 December 1837 in Munich as the second oldest daughter of Duke Maximilian of Bavaria. On April 24, 1854 she is married to Emperor Franz Joseph I. The marriage ceremony takes place in the Vienna Augustinerkirche, the wedding celebrations last until 30 April and end with a ceremony in the Redoutensäle the Hofburg. Since June 8, 1867 Elisabeth is also Queen of Hungary. Since the death of her son, Crown Prince Rudolf, in January 1889, she leads a restless life. Elisabeth is regarded as a great beauty, moreover, as one of the most educated and interesting women who tried to free herself from the prejudices of her state and her time. She was not ready to fulfill what was expected of an Empress. On September 10, 1898 Empress Elisabeth is assassinated in Geneva by the Italian anarchist Luigi Lucceni.
