Bertha von Suttner was born on June 9, 1843 in Prague. She worked as a journalist and published in 1889 her world-famous anti-war novel The Weapons Down. In 1891 she founded the "Austrian Society for Friends of Peace" and participated as a speaker in peace congresses throughout Europe. From Suttner opened up a completely new field of activity for women: organized peace activism. At her suggestion, the explosives inventor and manufacturer, Alfred Nobel, established a prize for deserving peace activists - the Nobel Peace Prize was born. This was received by Suttner himself on 10 December 1905 and became one of the most famous women of her time. She died on June 21, 1914 in Vienna.
