Born on January 26, 1886 in Stögersbach, in Lower Austria's Waldviertel, the son of a bricklayer and an agricultural worker, Johann Böhm spent his childhood in very modest circumstances. Böhm joined a mason in January 1900 in the bricklayer apprenticeship. He soon gave up apprenticeship and went to Vienna with his father to look for work there. In 1903 he joined the union of masons, and soon became a member of the Social Democratic Party. Two years later he became chairman of the local group Währing and 1912 chairman of the Association of Viennese local groups of the Maurer union. After the First World War Böhm continued his trade union way and became 1927 Viennese local council. In 1929 he was elected chairman of the Construction Workers' Union and in 1930 elected to the National Council. He laid the foundation stone for the Trade Union Confederation in 1945 and, in his new position as Secretary of State for Social Administration, helped to lay the foundations for social policy in the Second Republic. He held the office of a union president and the president of the main association of Austrian social security agencies and acted from December 1945, second National Council President. The deceased on 13 May 1959 Johann Böhm is considered one of the builders of the Second Republic and one of the greatest figures of Austrian social democracy.
