The graphic artist and painter Joseph Binder, born in Vienna in 1898, played a decisive role in shaping applied design in Europe and the United States as a witness to the new conception of art at the turn of the century. For Binder, the inventor of the legendary "Meinl-Mohren" (1924), everything has a function in design: Design has the function of presentation, communication and motivation. Through his artistic personality, Binder was called to design the "new art form" for visual communication, the "artistic poster". Since 1933, with brief interruptions in the US as a teacher and graphic artist, he gave the advertising graphics of the country decisive impulses. Joseph Binder, at the same time generalist and specialist, died in 1972 while preparing for his major exhibition at the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna.
