He was a great moral authority and one of the most charismatic politicians in Germany: Helmut Schmidt (December 23, 1918 to November 10, 2015). The statesman, who possessed great rhetorical talent and a razor-sharp mind, enjoyed a high reputation beyond the party boundaries. Helmut Schmidt was elected on May 16, 1974, the fifth Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. In the reign of the second SPD Chancellor after Willy Brandt fell oil crisis, inflation and RAF terror, but Helmut Schmidt coped with the challenges with foresight. In Ostpolitik he continued the course of his predecessor by signing the treaties of the "Conference on Security and Co-operation in Europe" (CSCE) and gained great national and international respect. From 1983 until his death, Helmut Schmidt was next to Marion Countess Dönhoff and Gerd Bucerius to the most prominent personalities in the Hamburg weekly newspaper "Die Zeit" - first as a co-editor, later as managing director.
