On March 4, 1904, the Jewish tenor Joseph Schmidt was born in Davideny on today's Romanian-Ukrainian border. At the age of 20 he went to Berlin and studied singing. He became famous mainly through concerts, radio appearances and recordings. His performances in operetta films such as »A song goes around the world« and »Today is the most beautiful day in my life« are still known today. In 1933 Schmidt escaped from the Nazis to Vienna, then to Brussels and southern France. In 1942 he entered Switzerland illegally. There he died in the same year in a detention center near Zurich from a heart attack.
