Mother Teresa was born on 26 August 1910 as Anjezë Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Macedonia. She entered 1928 in the Dublin Loretto Monastery and received there the religious name Teresa. The Order sent her to India, where she first worked as a teacher at St. Mary's Bengali Medium School in Calcutta, and later became its director. Since 1946, Mother Teresa has dedicated herself to the poorest of the poor in Calcutta, opened schools, maternity homes and a leprosy colony, and founded the family of missionaries and charitable missionaries working worldwide today. In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work. She died on 5 September 1997 in Calcutta and was beatified on 19 October 2003 by Pope John Paul II.
