The Viennese poet Ignaz Franz Castelli founded the Viennese animal protection association in 1846 with the motto "Protecting animals means helping people". Alarmed that animals did not have a lobby to protect themselves, he made animal welfare a life's work. From the humble beginnings in which homeless small animals were picked up from the street with a mule team, a company was established in 120 years, which takes up to 10,000 animals a year in its animal welfare homes and supplies. The Vienna Animal Welfare Association, which is also responsible for Lower Austria and Burgenland, today employs two veterinarians, has three animal rescue vehicles ready day and night to catch up with injured or abandoned animals and bring them to the shelter, where five guards take care of them. To review the advertisements received by the association, three animal welfare inspectors are available, who have to collect approximately 7,000 to 8,000 cases a year. The work of the animal protection association is financed by membership fees and donations, but above all by the annual animal welfare lottery. Numerous activities, such as working with schoolchildren, apprentice actions and the World Animal Day celebration are intended to help anchor the idea of animal welfare deeper into the population. In addition, this special stamp, which shows the head of a young fox dog to advertise it.
