The works of the German-speaking Prague writer Franz Kafka (born 3 July 1883) exerted a lasting influence on world literature. His main work consists of the three novels or fragments of the novel »The Process«, »The Castle« and »The Metamorphosis«. The main motive of his works is the impotence of the individual against all-powerful forces. He developed a special way of writing. The unreal situations described by Kafka within a threatening world are called kafkaesk. Franz Kafka died in 1924 at the age of 40 years of pulmonary tuberculosis in a sanatorium in Kierling, Austria.
