As early as 1835, DDSG had set up its own shipyard in Althofen near Budapest. In 1856 the company owned 93 steamships and 338 barges. By 1875, the fleet had increased to 201 steamers and more than 750 barges. In 1880, in its 50th year of operation, the company was rightly called the largest inland shipping company in the world and one of the largest corporations in the monarchy. The First World War brought heavy losses for society. Even in the inter-war period, the Danube Steamship Company recovered only slowly from this incision. The Second World War destroyed the company almost completely. Around 85 percent of its assets, including all its real estate in the southeast, were lost. Economic reconstruction after the war took place within the framework of nationalization. The State Treaty of 1955 finally secured the position of the DDSG as an Austrian company. Until 1968, the conversion of the ship park was completed on diesel propulsion. The stamp motif of this special postage stamp shows the push boat "Linz". It was built in the Linz shipyard in 1969 as the first Austrian push boat for the DDSG.
