The year 1980 was of great importance to the Austrian Customs Guard. Because she could look back on a 150-year tradition back then. By the result of the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Austria had recovered almost all parts of the territory that had been lost in the course of the French wars. Effective border control gained in importance. Although there was already a surveillance of the state or customs border before 1830, this happened mainly through the establishment of civilian border control and military. In order to eliminate various shortcomings of the internal organization of these institutions and to adapt to the political situation at that time, a uniform border guard was established in 1830 under the name "K.K. Grenzjäger". This date is regarded as the birth of the present Customs Guard. The reorganization after the First World War also brought decisive changes for the border guard corps. In the Customs Act of 1920, the name "Customs Guard" first appeared on. The violent Anschluss of Austria to Hitler Germany led to the dissolution of the Customs Guard. After the Second World War, the reconstruction of a border surveillance was tackled. But only after the withdrawal of the occupying powers in 1955, the equipment and training of the new Customs Guard could be designed so that it met the requirements placed on them. The accession of Austria to the European Union has also brought about fundamental changes in the field of customs.
