The birth of the Vienna Philharmonic can be seen on May 28, 1842, when Otto Nicolai (1810-1849) conducted a large concert in the Vienna Redoutensaal, which was performed by the entire orchestra staff of the k.k. Hofoperntheater was held. Even then, the principles of the Philharmonic Idea, valid until today, such as the recording of musicians only from the ranks of the orchestra of the Vienna State Opera as well as self-responsibility and democratic administration of the orchestra. Famous conductors, such as Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss, Karl Böhm and Herbert von Karajan have been closely associated with the Vienna Philharmonic in their 150-year history. As one of the most important cultural export articles of Austria, they are today part of international tours in the sense of the orchestra order "Pflege der Klassik".
