Born on 18 February 1838 in Chirlitz / Chrilice in Moravia, Ernst Mach began his studies in mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna. In 1864, at the young age of 26, he was appointed full professor of mathematics in Graz. In 1867 he was called to Prague, where he then taught 28 years. Mach was the first, at a time when there was neither cinematography nor aircraft taking sparks from the flying-bullet trains. He noticed how much the flow pattern in the vicinity of a moving projectile changes when it exceeds the speed of sound. He was a pioneer in the field of short-term photography and supersonic flight. The ratio of the speed of movement of a body to the speed of sound is called Mach number. The jerky process of breaking the sound barrier, i. when exceeding the speed of sound, however, was observed only after his death in 1916.
