On the occasion of the 200th birthday of the great German statesman, the Deutsche Bundespost is issuing this commemorative stamp, the design of which has been endeavored by four artists. Prof. Paul Dietrich, Prof. Karl Hans Walter and Bert Jäger have each submitted a proposal. The graphic designer Gerhard C. Schulz has presented two designs. Into the closer circle of the contemplation drew the art advice the solutions of the professors Paul Dietrich and Karl Hans Walter, which were both created in an excellent way for the steel engraving. The design with the profile in the pure profile was finally given preference because it exemplifies the principle of "brand" in the strict treatment of drawing and writing. The Postwertzeichen has been executed in the Bundesdruckerei Berlin in monochrome intaglio printing in red hue.
