The motif shows Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in front of a landscape of the "Campagna di Roma" during his study trip to Italy. It was painted in 1787 by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein. The artist was born on February 15, 1751 in Haina. In 1787 he was with Goethe in Naples. There he became an academy professor. His works, depictions of animals, fruits and flowers as well as portraits, are partly classicistic, partly realistic. The image of Goethe, which originated in Rome, is one of his most famous works. Tischbein died on July 26, 1829 in Eutin.
