With the issue of this special post stamp, Austrian Post honors one of the greatest musicians in history. As an important symphonist, Ludwig van Beethoven was the central figure in the entire musical development of the last century. His achievements contributed significantly to the further development of the music and set new impulses for the musical design. Born on 17 December 1770 Beethoven suffered from 1795 increasing deafness and lost from 1818 his hearing completely. In 1805 his only opera "Fidelio" was premiered. Nine symphonies, sixteen string quartets, five string trios, a violin concerto, songs, choral works, as e.g. the "Missa Solemnis" belong to the complete works of this gifted musician. Ludwig van Beethoven died on March 26, 1827.
