The writer Heinrich von Kleist was born on 18 October 1777 in Frankfurt / Oder. After a brief career with the military in Potsdam, he began writing in 1799. After a year and a half he dropped out of a versatile study at the university of his hometown as well as his employment in the Prussian Finance Department. From 1808 Kleist acted as publisher of the cultural magazine "Phöbus" and from October 1810 to March 1811 as publisher of the "Berliner Abendblätter". His best-known works include The Broken Jug, Michael Kohlhaas, Penthesilea, and Das Kathchen von Heilbronn. When he continued to be denied recognition for his literary work and his financial situation continued to deteriorate, Kleist took on 21 November 1811 on the small Wannsee near Potsdam the life.
