The armed forces of the Republic of Austria were set up as an armed force of the Republic of Austria on the basis of the regained freedom, and thus also of military sovereignty, with the military law of September 7, 1955. It was initially charged with the protection of the borders. In deliberate change of this task the Federal Army received on June 10, 1975, the order for military national defense, which was codified in the Federal Constitution. On the same day, the National Council unanimously introduced the resolution on comprehensive defense of the country (defense doctrine), which defined the order of the army. According to this defense doctrine, the armed forces have various defined tasks in peace, crisis, neutrality and defense. Since the Wehrmacht Act of September 7, 1955, the Armed Forces has been based on general conscription, which was incorporated into Article 9a of the Federal Constitution on June 10, 1975. As part of the United Nations peacekeeping operations, the Austrian Armed Forces has made a special contribution to world peace with contingents in the UN armed forces.
