On September 11, 1961, the WWF was founded in Zurich as a non-profit association. Only two years later, WWF Austria was founded, which was created parallel to the creation of the nature reserve "Seewinkel / Lange Lacke". With the support of the WWF-International, the last remnants of the Pußta were leased on Austrian soil for 20 years. This lease expired in 1985. Since then, the province of Burgenland has entered into the lease. The WWF has invested nearly 20 million schillings in the "Lange Lacke" reserve. This project is just one example of the countless activities of the WWFÖ Austria for the protection of nature. Not to be forgotten is the commitment of WWF in the course of the events around the Hainburger Au, which have led to a factual basis for discussion for the planned there "Danube March Thaya National Park". The creation of the nature reserves "Marchauen / Marchegg", "Hundsheimer Berge" near Deutsch Altenburg and "Pürgschachener Moor" in the Enns Valley are proof of successful initiatives to save unique habitats. Another focus of the WWF-Austria is the protection of species, the endeavors for the survival of endangered species in our latitudes.
